Future Plans, Probability and Predictions

“This weekend I will probably go to the cinema with my friends. After that, we will definitely go to a restaurant for dinner”

The simplest way to talk about future plans is to use the verb ‘Will’.

“This weekend I will go to the cinema with my friends”

But what about if we are not sure about this plan? Maybe the plan is far in the future, or you cannot decide. If so, then we can use an adverb

I will undoubtedly go to the party (100%)
I will definitely go to the party (100%)
I will go to the party (100%)
I will likely go to the party (70%)
I will probably go to the party (70%)
I will possibly go to the party (50%)

Remember to put the adverb after ‘will’

I undoubtedly won’t go to the party (100%)
I definitely won’t go to the party (100%)
I won’t go to the party (100%)
I likely won’t go to the party (70%)
I probably won’t go to the party (70%)
I possibly won’t go to the party (50%)

For negative sentences put the adverb before ‘won’t’

What about Adjectives?

“It is certain that I will go to England to study English this Summer”

Here are some useful adjectives to describe probability

Certain (100%) – It is certain that I will go on holiday this year

Definite (100%) – It is definite that I will go to the party this weekend

Likely (70%) – It is likely that we will move to Germany in March

Probable (70%) – It is probable that we won’t go to the party

Possible (50%) – It is possible that I will change school at the end of the year

Unlikely (30%) – It is unlikely that I will go out tonight

Impossible (0%) – It is impossible that we will change school at the end of the year

Verbs apart from Will?

“I might go to the party” (50-60%)

“I may go to the party”(50-60%)

“I could go to the party”(50-60%)

We can use these 3 modal verbs to describe probability with future plans and predictions. Some people disagree about the probabilities for these (may is higher than might for example) but the difference is very small if any.

Summary

We can use the language above to talk about plans and predictions for the future.
